1734-1802. English portrait painter, active
in London from 1762. He painted several
portraits of Lady Hamilton, Admiral Nelson's
mistress. Romney was virtually self-taught.
He set up as a portraitist in 1757, and in
1762 he went to London. There he became, with
Gainsborough and Reynolds, one of the most
successful portrait painters of the late 18th
century.
