  1. 1734-1802. English portrait painter, active
  2. in London from 1762. He painted several
  3. portraits of Lady Hamilton, Admiral Nelson's
  4. mistress. Romney was virtually self-taught.
  5. He set up as a portraitist in 1757, and in
  6. 1762 he went to London. There he became, with
  7. Gainsborough and Reynolds, one of the most
  8. successful portrait painters of the late 18th
  9. century.
